I remember the times when I followed as a small boy the strongman competition, the images of Jon Pall,his confidence,the will to win are some of the most powerfull tools I can use today when times are tough. Thank you Jon Pall for the inspiration "THERE CAN BE ONLY ONE"

A truly great man and a huge inspiration to so many, including myself. I love hearing stories about Jon Pall and I watch videos of him on a rather daily basis. I'm very impressed by a man so influential, so strong, so caring and kind hearted. A hell of a man; and a hell of a viking. RIP Jon Pall Sigmarsson

Yes today is Jon Pall's 50th birthday. We are waiting for the permission to raise the statue near Jakabol wich he started training. We really want to have this statue done this summar.

I am visiting Iceland this year and will be paying my respects to Mr Sigmarssons grave, what a legend of the sport and a legend of a man.

It was truly sad to see a man like jon pall die so young. Being Norwegian myself he is an inspiration to me, and I will not forget him! I know what it's like to lose a loved one, my dad had a massive stroke in 2008 at 57 years old. He did not pass, but he can't communicate like he once did. My grandpa came to the U.S. during world war II from Norway. He to had a history of heart problems.

He is definitely one the greatest strong men of all time. Not only was he such a great competitor, but he had so much class. I was not old enough to find out about him until he was gone, even so, he is still an influence on my weightlifting and my outlook on life. Because of him I've learned to always to look on the bright side and have a smile.

I am pleased to say I meet the great man at a local strongman contest in the Uk midalnds he was with jamie Reeves I got some Photos with him lovley man would definatly give marius a run for his money, power like you couldnt belive and huge in the flesh it makes me happy to see old world strongest man events with him but also make me sad to see what we lost, a driving force for me in the gym and to always have fun and enjoy life, I cherish my photos and glad I met him what a role model God Bless you Viking

I remember as a boy watching Jon Pall on Worlds strong man shows and he always made me smile.... what i liked so much about this man was the fact he was such a powerful and agressive man while he was lifting but he always kept that smile and fun side of his personality alive.... I have been watching re runs of the worlds strongest man on Bravo over the Christmas holiday which has been great to see.... A great Show man and a great man... Riccardo ....Gloucester

I remember being a little kid of about 8 years old or so, watching television in the eighties,
when I saw big strong guys competing for the 'World Strongest Man'.
I remembered Geoff Capes, and some 'big blond muscled guy' named 'Sigmarsson' ;-).
And so, recently, I started to look on YouTube to find more about him, and since then
I've seen all clips I could found out there, 'Larger than Life' of course, WSM competitions etc.
from the eighties, my best years, my childhood.
I had no idea I'd be so impressed by seeing his life story.
I just kept looking for movies on youtube I hadn't seen before, being very curious, and wanted
to know much more. And still have many questions about him (like: what was his profession besides being
strongman, or was he 'fulltime/professional' strongman. And how was he at school, etc etc...
Every time I feel down, or not so motivated, I look on YouTube for Jon Pall, shouting that
he's the strongest, the Viking. And not an eskimo (lol) ! ;-)
And it helps! So thanks to Jon Pall!

Jón Páll was to me, aside from being a very strong strongman :-) ,a very energetic and entertaining person.he always amused the crowd with his funny acts.I really loved to watch him when i was a kid.
it is really sad that he left the world so young :-/ .
but maybe he watches his family from the 'other dimension'(I believe there is one .definitely).

I have lifted for many years and only recently after suffering sudden and unexpected heart trouble myself have i taken an interest in Jon Pall Sigmarsson....he seems a very genuine,warm and likeable guy who had such incredible strength and intelligence....he really is an inspiration to anybody starting out in the iron game.....i only wish i could carry on myself....many thanks for a great site....RIP Mr.Sigmarsson.

Sigmarsson really was an unbelievable strongman and great person. Larger than life documentary is also a great documentary.
It would be great to see some scenes or information about Jon Pall`s training. Does anybody know is there any articles or texts about his training?

As a Norwegian weightlifter here in America I have always thought Jon Pall was the greatest strongman ever. Watching Jon Pall videos has inspired me to start deadlifting and I am over 600 lbs now. I would love to have a Jon Pall t-shirt and poster for my house. Long live the Viking tradition of strength, power and grace.

After watching a documentary about the world's strongest man competitions I was mesmerised by the sheer strength, talent and most of all charisma of Jon Pall Sigmarsson. I was shocked and saddened to hear of his untimely death. Although I only knew of him for about half an hour during the episode, the joy that he radiated felt like a lifetime. All the best to his family. RIP the Viking.

Recently watched a documentory on sky about wsm 30yrs history! I am truly ashamed not to of been aware Mr Jon Pall Sigmarsson,his achievements,his character,the man.I watched and re-watched this truly amazing guy and felt so saddened by his untimely death. Its highly unlikely I will ever visit Iceland,but if I did the first place would be to pay my respects at his graveside. Rest in peace

Jon Pall was, is and always will be a strength legend. He lived to lift..and he died lifting. I hope his son gets echocardiogram and proper cardiac imaging scan done before he ever lifts weights and then has regular repeats. It would be tragic if he doesn't as JP's aorta defect is normally hereditary.
Does anyone know if JP ever had these done as they can detect problems, aneurysm's, enlargement etc in time to get repaired before such a catastrophic event? Maybe he would be alive today if he did...maybe not? Great website!

he was indeed charismatic
i love that in him of course also allhis achievements.

Hace poco tiempo me entere de su muerte, una verdadera perdida, es muy dificil encontrar el carisma de jon pall aunado a su talento, todo en una sola persona!

Being a viewer of WSM during the 80s and 90s, like many here, its hard to forget the 4 greats: Kazmaier, Capes, Jon Pall, and later Magnus. In the late 90s, Ahola also comes to mind.
Capes was no doubt a great athlete. Magnus was maybe the closest physical image of a viking - because strong men of the past were not as defined as Jon Pall. And Jouko Ahola, pound for pound, was just amazing.
But if we had to pick the greatest of all, I think we all agree: it would be between Jon Pall and Kazmaier.
With all respect for Kazmaier's superhuman size and strength, I have to go with Jon Pall. He had the drive, the charisma, the fearlessness, and even the sense of humour, that legends are made of. He did with a smile, what other strongmen struggled to do. He knew he was the best - and he showed it not only with raw power, but with class. He was a true champion, a role model for all generations.
I'm now Jon Pall's age, when he died. I never met him, and yet, while watching his videos and reading about him, its so easy to feel close, and truly inspired, by him. His heart betrayed him - but what a great heart it was. He deserves to be remembered, not only by his feats, but above all for the great, albeit short, life that he had, and the legacy he left us. So, I think even death was no match for him: he won again.
Its no problem, for Jon Pall.

After many, many years I googled Jon Pall.
As a kid I loved to see the Strongmen contests. Sometimes when I open a tough bottle, I think by myself: "Im a Viking!"
I felt a shock when I saw he is dead already, only 33 years old, although he did it in "style" with a deadlift.

I`m from Germany. For me Jon Pall is one of the greatest athletes of all time. He was great as a strongman and with his big personality he will be in our minds forever. Thanks for all!

Jon I were very good friends from the time we 1st met in 1985 on my 1st visit to Reykjavik when I was involved in producing a play for the Icelandic national theatre.
Jon Pall was such a great guy, we became great friends almost instantly and we trained together regularly at several of the incredible gyms in Iceland but most memorably at Finnur Karlson’s gym where many, many times we’d start the workout day as early as 0400hrs when we’d walk across the frozen city of Reykjavik for our 1st workout session of the day – happy days indeed!
I remember SO many great social times in Iceland and at the Highland Games with Jon Pall too, with some really funny incidents along the way as well.
Such as the time when Jon Pall dropped by my 1st apartment in Reykjavik. He stayed only 5 minutes before leaving, he just shouted to me ‘I’ve seen a ghost’ then I saw him move faster than I’ve ever seen him move before!! Actually he was right, the place was indeed haunted and when my buddy Cliff Twemlow & I saw the same ghost Jon Pall had described actually move my shirt across the room a few days later, I very soon changed apartment after that!
I still keep in touch with my buddy Geoff Capes who competed against Jon Pall several times though sadly I’ve lost touch with Bill Kazmaier – so if you read this Bill then E’ me cos’ there’s an invitation waiting to be mailed to you!
But the times in Iceland and at the Highland Games will always be very special, we all had some great times and the memory of the Late-Great Jon Pall Sigmarsson will live on forever, he was a true son of Odin & for sure he’ll be in Valhalla now as the mightiest of them all!

There is videos about World`s Strongest Man 1990 competition. Jon Pall compete in this competition. I videotaped this competition when I was just 6 years old. Since then I have been very interested of strongest man competitions and later I started to train and compete.

Hi.
I only discovered Jon Pall tonight on tv in the 1983 Strong Man competition (something I'd not usually watch). He was amazing to watch and incredibly entertaining. The first thing I did afterwards was google him and here I am. I'm gutted he's not with us anymore. A true legend.

I sent some video fottage of jon-pall in 2006 to help out with the movie, Hjalti them to say thank you invited me to iceland in september 2006 to the movie primer.
It was great there i met jon-pall's family and so many other great peoble like Mr douglas edmonds and Randall Strossen owner of the ironmind site there it really was unbelivable for me jon-pall was a child hood hero when i first watch world's strongest man back in 1986 he is the most all round strongman ever.
It really was a special moment for me when Hjalti showed me jon-pall's grave to pay my respect.
I just wish that there were more strongman tv footage back in the 1980's like there is today so we could have seen more of the great man compete.

No one can deny or take that away even Kazmaier knew he met his match. I would love to see what Jòn Pall would do against Marius Pudjinowski, Marius would never have won a title if Jòn was around.

Yes, Jon Pall is the reincarnation of Magni. And he is the greatest strongman, the world has ever seen before - the most sympathic and charismatic of all, and of course the strongest man of all time.
It's very sad, that he had to die in 1993 in the age of only 32 years.
Let us all remember Jon Pall at January 16th, when he went to the gods. Tribute to Jon Pall - the one without a second, like Wotan.

To watch Jon Pall was to watch sheer greatness. I have followed his career since I was 11 years old. I found out in 2002 that Jon Pall and I were 4th cousins on my mothers side. They are all from Iceland. How many people can say they are related to a legend like Jon Pall.

Jón Pàll Sigmarsson, you accomplished so much in such a short time, if we all haven't been inspired by this man's dedication to life then we are missing out. I thank you Jón for getting me off the couch and going to the gym and being focused. For each person whether personal or through public media we were each afforded a chance to know you. You were the Viking of the hinter lands and no man will ever fill your shoes ...ever! I think we are all blessed you were able to leave a part of you behind with your son Sigmar. I hope he is the man he is destined to be.

I paid my respects to his resting place in May of this year. Truly a man among men...his love for the sport and his passion for life is an inspiration to us all. The great hall of Valhalla is now graced with his presence. Long may his spirit live.

JonPall has always been and always will be my biggest inspiration and the reason I started working out. It's a pity we cannot enjoy his company anymore cuz I think he'd wipe the floor with current WSM competitors.

great web site!!! i love watching wsm. i had won the poster of the jon pall movie in a contest that iron mind put out. i proudly have it hanging in my office at work. i am 39 years old and started competing in the highland games last year (amaturer class) i love working out. its a great motivation to view web sites like this one. thanks

I'm super strong for my age and my biggest inspirations as strongman are Jon Pall, Magnus ver Magnusson, and Samson from the bible.I'll always say that Sigmarsson is my favorite even though he died only a year after I was born. Jon Pall ruled! I grew up with Sigmarsson competing in the strongest man of the world competitions. Although there were plenty of Dutch strongmen competing, I always rooted for Sigmarsson, so did many of my friends...
